HORSE’S UPDATE ON COACHING DESIRE

John Longmire has provided an update on whether he’ll pursue a return to senior coaching.

It comes after it was reported by The Age on Tuesday night that neither Essendon nor Carlton had yet made contact with Longmire regarding their coach vacancies.

Tasmania is also looking for a senior coach, with the Devils previously reported to be interested in the Sydney premiership coach.

On Wednesday night, Longmire was asked whether he was any closer to deciding if he wanted to put his hand up for one of the three open jobs.

“(The) quick answer is no,” he said.

“I’m just waiting to see what transpires, and see how it all plays out.

“As I said a few weeks ago, things become a bit clearer as time passes, (but) at the moment, that’s how it sits with me.

“I know everyone wants a yes or no decision, but nothing’s changed from a couple of weeks ago from my perspective.”

Longmire gave a similarly coy response midway through May when asked the question on AFL 360.

“It’s not a simple yes or no answer. It’s not about that,” Longmire said last month.

“For me, these things tend to become clear over a period of time. I’m happy to let that time play out.

“But I’m not in the position at the moment in my own head to ascertain whether it’s a yes or no. I really don’t think it’s appropriate for me to say that if I don’t feel I’m ready to answer that.”

TIGERS UNLEASH ‘STEALTH’ STRIP

Richmond has unveiled its new ‘Stealth Sash’ guernsey, to be worn on a one-off occasion later in the year.

Instead of the traditional yellow sash, the black-dominant guernsey features a black sash with a yellow outline.

It includes yellow numbers on a sash-less back – a throwback to the 1995-2004 era when the back of the Tigers’ home jumper was all black with yellow digits.

The injection of a special edition one-off guernsey is basically unheard of for Richmond, which has historically only had alternate jumpers for Dreamtime at the ‘G and Anzac Eve.

The ‘Stealth Sash’ kit is rounded off with the club’s traditional black shorts and “one-off Stealth Socks”.

The strip will be worn against Carlton in Round 17 – a fixture the club is calling ‘Stealth Night at the ‘G’.

It follows in the footsteps of Fremantle’s ‘stealth guernsey’, while the Giants’ charcoal strip takes on a similar look.

ARROW TO MAKE SPECIAL KING’S B’DAY APPEARANCE

Retired NRL star Jai Arrow is set to make a special appearance for Monday’s King’s Birthday game.

Arrow, who recently retired after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, will toss the coin ahead of the annual Melbourne-Collingwood clash in a tribute to Neale Daniher, reports The Age.

Seven’s Tom Morris first reported Arrow was set to fly back from a neurological wellness retreat in Spain to be a guest for Collingwood and would be asked to toss the coin.

Monday will mark the 12th edition of the Big Freeze in support of FightMND and the first game following the death of Daniher.

Arrow, 30, announced his diagnosis in late May, just days before the passing of Daniher, who led the FightMND cause.

Arrow played 178 NRL games for the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans and South Sydney Rabbitohs, plus 12 appearances for Queensland in State of Origin.

BOBBY BACK AT PIES

Bobby Hill has returned to Collingwood HQ after a brief leave of absence in a positive development.

Hill was back at training on Wednesday after he last month travelled to Perth for the birth of he and his partner’s third child.

The Norm Smith medallist had been playing VFL in recent weeks and was last on the track with the twos last Wednesday night.

Hill hasn’t played an AFL game since Round 21 last season — when he was the sub against Brisbane.

The Pies have missed the 26-year-old’s forward half firepower in an area of the ground they’ve struggled, while Jamie Elliot’s season-ending ACL injury has added to those woes.

LATEST ON BLUES COACHING SEARCH

Carlton is “not in a rush at all” to select its next senior coach, despite Essendon joining the Blues in the coaching market after Brad Scott’s sacking.

But it’s believed the game’s highly-rated assistants will be the first candidates contacted by Carlton.

It comes after Blues chief executive Graham Wright said on SEN last weekend that the club wanted to appoint its coach by the end of the home and away season as it begins its search.

“The latest is the highly-rated assistants have been told they’ll most likely get the first call, just a touching base call, this week,” Herald Sun reporter Gullan said on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle.

“The Carlton process is about to kick into gear.”

The Age reports neither Carlton nor Essendon have reached out to Swans premiership coach John Longmire yet about their openings.

Wright, Carlton president Rob Priestley, football boss Chris Davies and Eagles premiership coach Adam Simpson, who’s been working at the Blues as a coaching consultant, make up the four-person panel that will ick the next coach.

RAZOR’S VERDICT ON WATSON NON-GOAL CALL

Umpiring great Ray ‘Razor’ Chamberlain says the Nick Watson non-goal call last weekend was wrong.

The AFL ticked off the controversial ruling that denied Watson a set shot goal on the half-time siren of Hawthorn’s win over St Kilda, after the umpire deemed that Watson ran off his line.

However, Chamberlain believes that was an incorrect decision, because the Hawks forward didn’t improve his angle, in a reference to the AFL’s rule book.

“Just because he doesn’t go around the corner, makes no difference,” Chamberlain said on Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“The law, as it states, addendum B, is you can wherever you like, so long as you do not improve your angle to the goal posts. He doesn’t do that.

“The literal application of the law says there’s no problem with that.

“I do want to highlight, I don’t think for one second ever the intention of addendum B was to allow them to go out to the side.

“I don’t think there’s any requirement for umpire intervention (with Watson).”

Chamberlain suggested the AFL’s endorsement of the call showed a disconnection with the game’s official rules.

“My interpretation of their behaviour is (the AFL) know that part B, addendum B is cumbersome and doesn’t represent what they want to see on the field,” he added.
