Late Mail: Will Latrell Mitchell actually play? That is the big question everyone is asking this week after the Rabbitohs superstar was a surprise addition to the reserves. Ask teammate Campbell Graham and he told reporters earlier in the week he was sceptical. “I doubt it,” he said. Wayne Bennett, however, told The Sydney Morning Herald that Mitchell is “some chance”. “He’s a chance. He’ll still have to get through a couple of training sessions,” Bennett added, hinting if Mitchell does return it would likely be off the bench to ease him in. If he isn’t good to go this week, Mitchell should be back the following week against the Titans.

Late Mail: Fullback Clint Gutherson will miss the remainder of the season with his knee injury. Gutherson had The Sydney Morning Herald he was hoping to return to the field even if scans confirmed he needed surgery, with the veteran fullback look to delay it until after the season. However, unsurprisingly, the Dragons have opted to shut Gutherson down for the rest of the season to ensure the injury does not get worse. For the time being, Daniel Atkinson will deputise for him at fullback. Elsewhere, the Herald also reported that Emre Guler is set to be granted an immediate release to link up with Wakefield. Guler had signed with Wakefield on a three-year deal started next year but will join his new teammates in the coming days as they prepare for the finals. Blake Lawrie looms as the logical option to join the reserves with Josh Kerr or Toby Couchman starting in Guler’s place. The only name to note on the reserves is Kade Reed, who is eyeing a return after a long injury layoff. Dean Young was the coach to hand Reed his debut and if he is fit, could look to give the youngster another crack without the same spotlight that was on the Dragons during their losing skid. At the same time, there may be a hesitation to change a winning formula. Luciano Leilua also remains on the reserves but is off-contract at the end of the year and reportedly out of favour at the club, so unlikely to get another look-in as the Dragons plan for the future.

Late Mail: The Bulldogs are unlikely to make any big changes despite NRL 360 co-host Braith Anasta labelling Stephen Crichton’s move to the halves a “band-aid solution”. While Crichton has made the most of the move, the Bulldogs have lacked the steadying hand of a traditional halfback in recent weeks. Sean O’Sullivan is off-contract at the end of the year and reportedly won’t be offered a new deal though, so it is hard to see the Bulldogs going back to him, especially with their season still mathematically alive.
