JUNE 30 – ANOTHER EAGLES FLAG-WINNER RETIRES
West Coast has lost another link to its 2018 premiership side with small forward Jamie Cripps announcing his retirement, effective immediately.
Briefly a Saint before being traded to the Eagles to play 261 of his 277 career games, Cripps kicked 339 goals and was often underrated across his 16-year career.
Only five players have kicked more goals for West Coast, only nine have played more games for the club, and none have recorded more goal assists (188).
Remarkably Cripps was the Eagles’ leading goalkicker last year.
Cripps, 34, is currently sidelined with a knee injury and cited the issue as a reason for his decision.
“I would like to just thank the club, it’s been an awesome 14 years and a privilege to play for a great club like West Coast,” Cripps said.
“To play so long and play with some amazing players along the way as well, it’s just been such a fun ride.
“My family make me tick and they’re who I do it for, so to have their support over the years has been massive.
“Now I’m ready for my knee to start feeling better so I can run around with the kids and see what their journey might be, which I’m looking forward to.”
Cripps kicked a career-best 38 goals in the Eagles’ 2018 premiership campaign, notably having 24 disposals and three goals in the preliminary final that year.
“My role was to work as hard as I could up the ground and back, put as much pressure on as I could in the forward line,” Cripps said.
“As much hard work as I could do for the team, that’s what I was there for, and every now and then would kick a couple of snags.
“The best part has been going into the Club every day and doing it with 40 of your good mates, putting in the hard work, getting to the weekends and playing games.
“They were the highlights for me, and the obvious one is ’18.”
JUNE 22 – SWANS VETERAN CALLS IT QUITS
Three-club veteran midfielder Taylor Adams has announced his retirement from the AFL.
The 229-gamer, who has been hampered by injury in the past two seasons after arriving at the Swans via trade at the end of 2023, revealed his decision to teammates on Monday morning.
A first-round pick in 2011, Adams started his career at the Giants before building his reputation as a hard-nosed ball-winner at Collingwood between 2014-23.
His decorated 15-year career is headlined by All-Australian selection and a Magpies best-and-fairest triumph in 2020, before playing in Sydney’s 2024 grand final loss to Brisbane. He spent eight years in Collingwood’s leadership group.
“I’m incredibly grateful to all three clubs I have played for and to have had an amazing football journey,” Adams said in a statement on Monday.
“It was always a dream of mine to play at the highest level, so to have played AFL for well over a decade is something I should be really proud of.
“To the Giants, Pies and now the Swans, I want to say thank you to all three clubs and to all of the staff involved in my career along the way. It’s been a great journey, but I’m now ready for another chapter.”
Repeated hamstring problems plagued Adams at the end of his career, with his most recent setback coming in his VFL return less than a fortnight ago.
MAY 28 – RICHMOND SIGNS TALLEST PLAYER IN AFL HISTORY
Former US college basketballer Patrick Carr has signed with the Tigers, and will become the tallest player ever on an AFL list.
The 217cm Melburnian played footy as a teenager but spent time in basketball at the University of Texas at Tyler, a small city east of Dallas, where he was listed at 7’1”.
He played alongside Richmond’s Thomas Sims at Parade College and will now reunite with his schoolmate, joining the club as a category B rookie due to his time away from the code, reports AFL Media.
Former Tiger Mate Colina was the previous tallest-ever player on a AFL list at 213cm, while Mason Cox, Aaron Sandilands and Ned Reeves (211cm) are the tallest to actually play.
Carr is therefore the first AFL-listed player who stands 7 feet tall (or higher).
