Ed Allan Collingwood contract talks, Magpies miss out on Jake Rogers, Todd Marshall, Tom Lynch future

PIES TAKE LONG-AWAITED STEP IN YOUNG GUN RETENTION

Collingwood has reportedly begun talks with Ed Allan’s management over a contract extension.

That’s according to the Age’s Jake Niall, who reports on Wednesday it’s the “first confirmation” after months of speculation that the club is “keen to retain” the uncontracted Claremont product.

It comes as the 22-year-old has staged a career-best season in an enhanced midfield role, averaging 15.4 disposals, 4.8 tackles and 2.7 inside-50s.

Previously deployed mainly as a wingman and run-with tagger, Allan’s development has been on show in his fourth AFL campaign, with the 30-gamer on Wednesday earning selection to the 22Under22 squad of 40.

Collingwood’s list management team is working through pertinent end-of-season calls, headlined by out-of-contract veterans Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, Jeremy Howe and Tim Membrey.

Howe is set to play on into 2027, while Sidebottom has been tipped to retire, while there’s still uncertainty around Pendlebury’s call.

It comes as the Pies are favourites to land dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale as an unrestricted free agent.

PIES MISS OUT ON SUNS GUN

Collingwood, along with others, have reportedly missed out on Gold Coast’s Jake Rogers.

The Suns small forward was thought to have been available to rivals after an indifferent start to the year, with the Magpies at the front of the queue.

After nine senior games in each of the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Rogers has appeared just six times for Damien Hardwick’s side.

He returned to the lineup last Sunday against Melbourne after a layoff dating back to Round 7.

And on Wednesday, AFL Media’s Riley Beveridge reported that the 21-year-old former first-round pick has agreed to a contract extension up north.

“Jake Rogers had garnered interest from a host of Victorian clubs; Collingwood was front and centre of that queue, Hawthorn also had a look at Rogers,” Beveridge said on AFL Media’s Gettable.

“But in recent days, Gold Coast has made significant progress on retaining Rogers … now looks set to stay, shaping towards that way on a two-year deal that would take him through to 2028.”

Rogers, a Broadbeach product, is a graduate of the Suns’ Academy and has played 24 AFL games since arriving in 2023 as the No.14 pick.

He was drafted in the same class as fellow Academy products Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Will Graham.

Collingwood’s search for an addition to its small forward ranks comes days after finalising the cessation of Bobby Hill’s contract.

FRESH NAME IN TRADE RUMBLINGS

Contracted Port Adelaide swingman Todd Marshall could be on the lookout for a new AFL home in 2027, per a report.

Marshall has had an indifferent year — his 10th season since arriving at Alberton as the 16th pick in 2016 — while battling concussion and form hurdles.

The 27-year-old was tried in defence as Josh Carr mixed things up early in his first season as coach, but has since moved back forward, kicking two goals in last Saturday’s loss to the Giants.

Marshall has featured in three SANFL games this year after having played at least 19 AFL matches in each of the past four seasons.

Now, the Age reports “both parties could be open to him receiving a fresh start” this offseason.

It comes as the Murray Bushrangers product has a deal that runs through 2029 — a five-year contract he signed in 2024.

The Power have gotten 20 games into promising key forward Jack Whitlock alongside Mitch Georgiades, while 2024 recruit Jack Lukosius has settled on a wing.

The club also has Ollie Lord developing in the background, though the 24-year-old managed just one senior game this year before rupturing his ACL.

‘SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAINTY’ SURROUNDING TIGER

There’s said to be a “significant amount of uncertainty” surrounding the footballing future of Tom Lynch.

The long-time Richmond spearhead remains without a new deal for next season, having put off talks.

In 12 games this year, the 33-year-old has kicked 16.20. It comes after he played 16 games last year, which followed an injury-plagued 2023-24 stretch.

Midweek Tackle’s Lauren Wood shared her findings from a recent chat with the All-Australian goalkicker.

“I must admit, it feels like there is a significant amount of uncertainty,” Wood told Fox Footy of Lynch’s future.

“A real crunch couple of weeks are looming for Tom Lynch, and a lot of conversations still to play out with the club.

“I asked him straight out, ‘do you want to play on?’ There was a little bit of hesitancy there — ‘I don’t really know, I’m going to have to talk to the club …’

“We know that he essentially parked any consideration while he was dealing with that larynx issue … it’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks, no doubt, on the front for Tom Lynch.”

It comes as fellow premiership veteran Dion Prestia also remains without a 2027 deal, while Nathan Broad confirmed his retirement on Tuesday.
