LATEST TALKING POINTS (pre-Friday night)
Brisbane’s clash with Collingwood will shape what has become the most important part of the premiership race, for a very unfortunate reason.
The Lions begin Round 24 sitting third on the ladder, ahead of Hawthorn by 2.2 percentage points – roughly seven goals.
With the Hawks playing in the final game of the round against lowly West Coast, the Lions don’t just need to win to clinch a top-four spot, but to win by as much as possible – to make it harder for Hawthorn to catch them.
Finishing third will see a team travel to Sydney for a qualifying final against a Swans side weakened by the absences of multiple superstars following Monday morning’s alleged incident.
Compared to finishing fourth, and travelling to face flag favourites Fremantle, the reward for finishing third is therefore massive with a home preliminary final up for grabs.
As one example, if Brisbane def Collingwood by four goals 80 to 56, and in the Hawthorn-West Coast game the Hawks allowed 56 points, they would need to score 121 to pass Brisbane.
Similarly whoever finishes sixth will have a greater than usual chance of making a preliminary final, as they would face the Swans if they lose their qualifying final. Should all favourites win this would be Geelong.
